Well, I finished Dune. It was really difficult for me because sci-fi isn't really my best genre. However, I was able to get into it, with a little help from my hubby. I needed to picture things that I'm not familiar with. I'm soooo not mechanical =;P Anyway, He read with me for the first chapter or so and helped me get the feel of it. (Now that I look back, he mostly listened as I told him what I thought I should be seeing and eventually I was able to picture it). Hmmm.

thoughts - spoiler alertCollapse )

All that said, here's my synopsis:

Would I recommend it? Possibly, if the per really enjoys sci-fi. Rate it on a scale of 1-10... 8. Will I read it again? Definitely, just to see if I missed some of the finer details. I plan to keep the copy in my library to reread.

Okay. Here we go. I hope my LJ cuts work!

Reading this book was a bit of a struggle for me. I finished it because I was committed already to the story by the time the writing and narrative style annoyed me beyond belief.

To begin with, read my thoughts-spoiler alertCollapse )

At best, the book was averagely entertaining and if her research was accurate, a decent lesson in history. At worst, it did not live up to expectations and became something quite other than it was advertised as being.

Would I recommend it? No. Rate it on a scale of 1-10... 5. Will I read it again? Never.

The Historian

Well, I really enjoyed this book. There are some obvious issues with it, but I liked the story. Here are my thoughts:

Don't click here if you haven't finished...spoilers includedCollapse )

All that said, here's my synopsis:

Would I recommend it? Probably. Rate it on a scale of 1-10... 7. Will I read it again? Possibly, just to see if I missed some of the finer details... However, it will not be my first choice when entering my library. I will, however, keep it on my shelves. That says more than you know.

Okay, it's almost the last day of the month and I'm only on page 200 or so. A third of the way through the book. Perhaps December was not the best month for me to choose to participate. Too much holiday stuff.

Anyway, I can't say I'm loving it so far. I have some issues with Read more...Collapse ) In any case, I will continue to read it because I have this "finish what you started" mentality with so many things.

January is out for me. There is no way I can suffer through "Dune" when I have a pile of "to be read" books that are far more enticing. Many of which were Christmas gifts.

Good luck! I'll be back in February if you're still around.

We are agreed. December's Book of the Month is The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Once you have finished reading, please post your opinions. Please remember to use lj-cuts for all spoilers.

January's Book of the month is Dune by Frank Herbert.

Enjoy & I look forward to opinions and feedback!

Well, If I had to choose, I would choose "The Historian". However, I'm not opposed to having two books for the month and each person sharing on the book they read. (I will probably read both). How do you both feel about choosing "Dune" and "The Historian" for the month of December?

Another choice would be "The Historian" for December and revisit the "Dune" possibility for January.
